CHAPTER SEVEN
WEâRE ONLY THREE blocks away from the studio when I realize exactly what weâve just done.
âWeâre going to be in so much trouble!â I sputter, still tightly gripping the wheel. âWe stole these clothes and this cart andââ
Nana Rhea starts laughing. âItâs okay, Audrey.â She waves me off. âWeâll return the outfits.â
âIt isnât funny. We trespassed!â I swerve the cart left to miss a lady and her small, fluffy dog.
âOf course itâs funny. Did you see the look on the security guardâs face?â
âWho are you?â I ask her. I want to turn my head to look at her, but Iâm worried that if I take my eyes away from where Iâm driving, Iâll hit a lamppost.
âSweetheart, I havenât felt more like myself in years. Besides, I thought you wanted to break rules.â
âWell, yeah, I did.â I shift in my seat. âBut, like, small rules.â
My parents are already going to ground me until the next century for ditching them and my phone. I donât need real crimes added to my list of offenses. I only need a little proof that I can do things my friends like to doâa few non-boring thingsânot lawbreaking things!
Then, as if responding to my thoughts, I see a shop that will give me exactly what I need.
I hit the brakes, and Nana Rhea and I both lurch forward.
âAre you done driving? Do you want me to take the wheel?â Nana Rhea asks with a raised eyebrow.
I try not to look horrified at her question as I answer, âUm, no. I want to go in there.â I point to the shop weâve stopped next to. The sign in its window reads ROXIEâS PIERCING AND TATTOO PARLOR. It looks exactly like the type of place this version of Audrey would like.
Nana Rhea follows my gaze and frowns. âDonât be ridiculous, Audrey. Iâm a very understanding grandma, but tattoos at age eleven? Your parents would never speak to me again.â
âIâm almost twelve. And Iâm just going to get my ears pierced like my friends.â
Newly pierced ears will be the perfect proof that I donât only do boring things. Once my friends see them, theyâll have to invite me back into the group.
Nana Rhea lets out a relieved sigh and puts her hand to her heart. âThat Iâm okay with.â
I grin.
âAlthough,â she continues, âwe still donât have any money.â
My grin drops. Oh, right. That part.
âBut letâs ask them if theyâd be willing to mail me a bill,â Nana Rhea says as she steps out of the golf cart and marches toward the shop.
I scramble out of the cart after her, pleased that sheâs thought of a solution. As we step inside, a bell above the door chimes.
âBe right there!â someone calls from behind a curtain.
Thereâs a whirring noise echoing in the shop that reminds me of the drills my dentist uses. It makes me queasy. They donât use drills to pierce your ears, do they?
Nana Rhea doesnât seem to mind the noise. She walks over to the counter and starts flipping through one of the binders atop it.
